La Clusaz

Shhh Don’t Tell anybody…

La Clusaz is situated in the Haute Savoie region of France, this relatively small village hides a deceptively large amount of ski terrain with spectacular scenery. La Clusaz is part of the Massif des Aravis ski area offering a wide range to suit all abilities from nursery slopes to some incredible backcountry.  In recent years it has also become the mecca for professional freeskiers and freestylers.

With 132km of groomed trails, stretching out over five inter-connected ski areas, each with its own unique character. Woodland trails give way to open bowls and much of the off-piste can be reached from the lift stations, involving very little climbing. The nature of the terrain, much of it meadow-land and grazing during the summer months, ensures that even with a light snow covering the ski area can be fully accessed. Although it does boast an annual average snowfall of more than six metres making this one of Frances snowiest resorts.

Beginners both adults and children are well catered for too, with nursery slopes in the village, alternatively near the top of the Beauregard gondola lies a sunny plateau with green and blue runs with a gentle blue run descending to the village.

La Clusaz and the surrounding area are an intermediates paradise with a variety of runs that will hone your skills and take you on to the next level.

A first glance at the piste map doesn’t look encouraging for advanced and expert skiers but don’t be alarmed. Even on piste there is fun to be had at La Balme, including the seriously steep black Vraille run. On L’Etale, the Tetras and Mur d’Edgar justify their grading as blacks, not forgetting there is some excellent off piste.

Few French villages are more picturesque, and the traditional village square and Savoyard church revel in their own prettiness. Busy streets fan out from the square, each boasting excellent shops, bars and restaurants– all with a calmly Gallic feel. Enjoy the traditional outdoor market held every Monday, certainly worth a visit.

This is an ideal resort for the non skier or for those who don’t want to pound the slopes. There are cleared walks, opportunities for snowshoeing and sledging, an ice-skating rink, and an aqua-centre with indoor and outdoor heated pools.

Within close proximity to Geneva this makes it an ideal destination for short breaks.
