Cortina d’Ampezzo is surrounded by some of the most stunning mountain scenery in Europe. The Dolomites, now recognised as an UNESCO world natural heritage site, provides a truly outstanding backdrop to this sophisticated town.  The town is encircled with rose-tinged peaks and pinnacles which soar above the slopes offering a truly magnificent setting.  So beautiful are surrounding scenes that the resort has been a major location for many big movies, including the James Bond 007 film ‘For your Eyes Only’ and The Pink Panther.

This is Italian chic at its best; Cortina is Italy’s most fashionable ski resort which today is renowned for its shopping.  The traffic-free town is lined with many shops and galleries that would not look out of place in London’s Knightsbridge and is home to some of the most prestigious names in fashion.  However for those who like something a little less dazzling, there are also numerous artisan shops, antiquarians, and craft stores.

But whilst many of Cortina’s Gucci-clad Italian visitors are taking pleasure in the pageant of promenading, people watching and enjoying long leisurely lunches on the sunny terraces, the good news for the ardent skier is that the stunning slopes are left empty for those who have actually want to ski.

The two main skiing areas are located at opposite ends of the town.  Though more suited to beginners and intermediates, there is something to be found to please everyone as they offer a variety of slopes, catering to all age groups.

For those who may wish to explore other resorts in the region, Cortina is part of the Dolomite Superski area, the world’s largest skiing carousel that links twelve ski resorts on one pass.

For non-skiers, or for those who just would like some time out from the slopes, there are many opportunities to enjoy the breath-taking views, the wonderful mountain restaurants and hospitable huts that are dotted amongst the woods and forests. “Slow snow” following Slow food and Slow travel are for those who enjoy contact with nature and more contemplative sports to the speed of alpine skiing. Here you are spoiled for choice with unparalleled walks, snowshoeing, sledging, and some excellent cross country trails.
